Exhibition František Dvořák: Merry Perversions

The opening of the exhibition will take place on Friday, December 8, 2023 from 6:00 p.m. in Jatka78.

We cordially invite you to the exhibition of the sculptor František Dvořák: Merry Perversions.

Dvořák (*1986, Velké Meziříčí) successfully graduated from the Sculpture Studio under Professor Jiří Beránek at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Dvořák's work is distinguished by a specific, disorderly visual overload of images and objects that combine both a purely authorial and ready-made approach. Even though the objects and paintings are at first glance composed of various found or purchased objects or have a composition and shape inspired by these objects, there is a large degree of authorial input. The artist rarely limits himself to simply presenting his works on the wall, rather he creates entire complicated environments that the viewer can seemingly penetrate but rarely fully understand.

The exhibition Merry Perversions presents an artistic concept combining three key elements – altars, neon lights and the authorial objects. The trio of altars, which are placed in the heart of the gallery, create a special spiritual atmosphere intertwined with various religious and erotic symbols. The imaginary fourth altar is the theatre stage of the R.I.E. performance itself, which invites the viewer to actively participate in the artwork. The overall composition of the altars may evoke in the visitor reminiscences of the ongoing Advent, when the world awaits the birth of Jesus Christ.

The glowing lights that surround the entire exhibition are a symbol of modern consumerist Christmas. Their character also conveys the glow of the lights of the heavily decorated houses, which evoke the illumination of brothels and other nightlife venues. The neon lights also create a dynamic contrast with the static altars that highlight the genius loci.

The sculptures in this exhibition display a rich and diverse collection of symbols. They include religious motifs imbued with eroticism, reflect on gender issues, contain attributes of life and death and have a certain euphoric element. The artwork is presented with the aim of evoking a wide range of emotions and thoughts in the viewers, but at the same time leaving room for a variety of personal interpretations.
